There's a fee for parking and entry. Be sure to look your car and take valuables with you as the lot is known for theft. We dragged our canoes a long way. Ran out of food, ate crawfish, and got sun burnt when we arrived at Smith Lake. Then we proceeded to reduce inventory at the Dairy Queen. I checked out the HawkWatch site that you mentioned, lots of good info there - thanks! Wondering if you can recommend any particular locations for photographing the birds in flight during the migration (frame-filling shots, not tiny specks! :) ). I hope to be able to hike to the observation point but don't want to get in the way of those doing the monitoring and banding, etc. Thanks, and great blog!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06137598400188395851noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810090747799821057.post-67122612578757992442014-05-14T19:01:07.698-05:002014-05-14T19:01:07.698-05:00Tom

Anyway, we haven't had any rain this week so I don't expect the Sipsey to be any higher than it was when we did this trip last (Oct 26-28). I was in a kayak and had to do some (minimal) dragging. Check water levels before you go but you should be OK if you put in at 33. There are a half dozen nice campsites (sand bars) in the first 2-4 miles. Don't wait too long--the banks get steeper, the water deeper and sandbars few and far between.Tomhttp://www.dispatchesfromthewildworld.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-810090747799821057.post-44406280639342849462012-11-01T22:44:46.568-05:002012-11-01T22:44:46.568-05:00Hey Tom, I was thinking of floating from HWY 33 to...Hey Tom, I was thinking of floating from HWY 33 to 278 this weekend Saturday Nov. 3rd. I've got a 17' Necky Looksha IV touring kayak. Do you think I can float the section below the put-in without having to drag the boat this time of year? Also, any noteworthy campsites in the first 2 to 3 miles? Thanks buddy, I just moved to Birmingham from Knoxville and am having withdrawals!
